Listen Later

Akiko Thomson-Guevara  is the most accomplished Filipina swimmer in the Southeast Asian Games. She was born in Washington, DC, although her family relocated to Manila when she was a child. She competed in three Olympics and won seven gold medals at the 1987 and 1991 Southeast Asian Games.

In this episode, she discusses her humble beginnings. An athlete's journey is not full of rainbows; she also faced struggles and challenges that caused her to lose her passion and drive for everything she does. With the help of her mentors, coaches, and family, she overcame all of her obstacles and rediscovered herself and her love of swimming.
