Alaskan Whales: A Spiritual Celebration of Culture and Tradition

Listen Later

On December 10th, we celebrate a quirky and little-known holiday called "Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales Day." This unique holiday originated in the town of Barrow, Alaska, now known as Utqiaġvik, which is the northernmost city in the United States.

The Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales Day is a celebration that honors the spirits of whales that have been hunted by the indigenous Iñupiat people. The Iñupiat have a deep respect for the whales and believe that their souls must be properly cared for to ensure a bountiful harvest in the future.

On this day, the community gathers to share traditional foods, such as whale blubber and muktuk (frozen whale skin and blubber), and participate in storytelling and dancing. The festivities often include the blanket toss, a tradition where a person is thrown high into the air using a large blanket made from seal or walrus skin, held taut by several people.

The festival also serves as a way to pass down knowledge and traditions from elders to younger generations, helping to preserve the Iñupiat culture and their strong connection to the whales and the sea.

While the Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales Day may seem unusual to outsiders, it is a significant and meaningful celebration for the Iñupiat people, showcasing their rich history, cultural heritage, and the importance of whales in their daily lives and spiritual beliefs.
