The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island, which is 1.25 miles away from San Francisco. The prison opened on August 11, 1934 and was home to some of America’s most notorious criminals. The prison closed on March 21, 1963. After a brief but interesting Native American occupation, the prison is now a tourist destination with lots of stories to tell.
