Finding Freedom

Alcohol and Anxiety: speaking with Molly Desch

Listen Later

Molly Desch is a certified life coach and has developed the alcohol-free foundation programme to help others after her own struggles with drinking. Molly joins Dawn in this episode to share her personal journey and why she is now passionate about helping others to overcome their problems, particularly around drinking and learning better ways to cope with the stresses of life. Dawn and Molly also explore society's impact on problem drinking and its strong links with anxiety.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Molly struggled with alcohol as a working mother, she used it to help her de-stress and that resulted in her drinking heavily every day as a crutch to deal with life.
  • Although many people use alcohol to relax it actually increases anxiety chemically in the brain.
  • After going through a divorce, Molly’s alcoholism accelerated, her behaviour felt out of control and she found herself depressed and suicidal. She knew something had to change.
  • Molly started to get sober by attending AA meetings. She found the beginning of recovery quite simple, helped in some ways by the Covid pandemic.
  • In the second year of giving up alcohol, she relapsed which made her realise she didn’t have the underlying structure to live sober. This is what led to her becoming a coach as well as learning how to build a solid foundation to aid her in living sober.
  • It’s so easy to fall into old habits, traits and coping mechanisms. Until you work on the reasons behind what you are struggling with and learn new ways to deal with your problems you will inevitably slip back into old ways.
  • Being self-aware and talking to yourself in times of stress means that you are reprogramming your subconscious, it’s incredibly powerful.

BEST MOMENTS

“For many years of my adult life, I was a very heavy drinker”

“It [alcohol] becomes a crutch”

“It’s not enough to say I’m going to quit drinking, you have to evaluate your coping mechanisms and build a foundation”

“By talking to yourself your sub-conscious mind is always listening”
