2022 Sergio Melta Medalist Alex Mullen opens up about his early footballing years being a part of a well known football family in South Australia. He shares the memories of playing with his cousins, including former Adelaide United defender Daniel Mullen and an incident with his brother, Matt which saw him sitting out from future games with a bruised coccyx.

Having his uncle as the coach of Adelaide United's Youth team didn't bring easy access for the teenager, after getting a trial with the club, it only lead to a tough conversation. Alex talks about how a move to Sydney FC under Graham Arnold became available, after his former coach Barney Smith called his own father, former coach at the Australian Institute of Sport.
