Alfred Packer was a man with very little, who in the winter of 1874 spent 57 days trapped in the San Juan Mountains with a group of fellow prospectors. He was the only one who would make it out alive.
Those he encountered afterward found it suspicious that he appeared well-fed, healthy, and a whole lot richer. When questioned about the fate of his companions he stated that they had abandoned him.
Packer eventually admitted to eating the other men to survive. However, in the end, he gave multiple confessions and his inconsistent versions of the story have caused many to wonder what actually happened.
