Late Night Conversation, hosted by Paul Martone

Tonight our featured guest is Alisha Sommer, founding editor of BLACKBERRY: a magazine. BLACKBERRY’s goal is to expose readers to the diversity of the black woman’s experience and strengthen the black female voice in both the mainstream and independent markets. BLACKBERRY’s editors hope to illuminate the exceptional work of a newer generation while reaching back to those whose words may have been ignored in the past.

Giveaway: Win a copy of Blackberry: a magazine by reading Anais Duplan’s Notes on Being a Permanent Resident Alien and Other Tomfooleries and emailing a response in creative or expository form to [email protected] by December 31. An excerpt from the winning response will be read on a future episode of Late Night Conversation.

I didn’t see a lot of magazines that featured writers that looked like me; either a woman of color or a black woman in particular . . . Sometimes when you don’t see what you want to see, you have to go create it.
