All-Embracing Compassion: The Heart-Practice of Tonglen

In order to have compassion for others, we have to have compassion for ourselves. In particular, to care and have compassion for other people and experiences that are fearful, angry, jealous, selfish, mean—you name it—means not to run from the pain within ourselves. We human beings tend to avoid suffering, unpleasantness and uncomfortability, while we gravitate toward pleasure, comfort or something "better." In order to stop this cycle, we can use the precious heart-practice of Tonglen. Tonglen is a Tibetan word that means "sending and taking." Using this powerful and highly effective practice, we learn to embrace our life experiences with more openness, compassion, inclusiveness and understanding. To cultivate a deep compassion for all living beings, including ourselves, we need to meet and embrace reality in a radically new way.
