Not Exactly James Harriott
I found this book in a flyer from CBD (Christian Book Distributors), at least I think I did. I often browse their sales flyer and when I can find it cheaper, I buy on Amazon. I was expecting a tamer read is the point that I am making. This is an adult read, with adult content, and adult language throughout. James Harriott's work, although the stories were true to life, they were rated G and the characters in his books came alive with the everyday and all of their quirks. While I think the author does bring her characters to life, this book is definitely for mature audiences. While I enjoyed the book as it is an earthy view of life as a country vet (although this is a work of fiction) and I laughed at many of the situations she found herself in, it just was not exactly what I was expecting. The book also seemed to be a catharsis for the author through the character of Maggie (the main character) as she works through a major life changing event. While this aspect did not bother me as much as it did some of the other reviewers, I think that if I had known the "flavor" of the writing, then I probably would not have picked this as a read. While some of the stories in the book seem outlandish, I imagine that they could in fact occur. The unique aspect of this book is in the individual titles of the chapters. The author (in one sentence) describes what will happen in that chapter. I've never really seen this sort of introduction and it set the tone for the story that follows. The other unique writing aspect was the fact that it follows Maggie throughout her life and the changes (joys and otherwise) that occur. All in all, I think it is a good read but I would have liked to have known that is the antithesis of James Harriot of which it was compared in the book's synopsis.
Disappointing letdown
âAll Godâs Creatures,â by Carolyn McSparren, started out as a pretty good read.
Itâs about a very determined young Southern woman named Maggie who became a successful veterinarian at a time when women were still jeered at in science classes and labs, being expected to stay home and suppress their own talents and vocational callings in favor of domestic pursuits. Told in first person, the book is quite realistic, interesting, and generally good humored.
Unfortunately, the narrative also contains profanity, which seemed to pick up in frequency as the story wound down. I finally tired of that and stopped reading about two-thirds of the way through the book. (Alas, Iâll never know how Maggieâs fascinating saga ends.)
Surprisingly funny, entertaining (and educational)
I am not a horse lover or a farm girl, but that didn't (really) matter when reading this book.
