Jesus is my King
Americans today don’t have a lot of experience with kings. Our perceptions come mainly from history books, movies, and TV. A general definition of a king, therefore, is a man who craves power, rules with fear and an iron fist, and spends most of his time fighting to keep his kingdom for himself.
Today we celebrate Jesus as King of the Universe. Yet Jesus does not fit our definition of a king. He doesn’t crave power—He comes to serve others. He doesn’t rule with fear—He is the personification of love. His way is not with an iron fist but with a gentle hand to guide and comfort us. And Jesus doesn’t exclude anyone from His kingdom—He wants to give it to everyone so they can share in His royalty.
This new definition of king is so very different from what we have come to expect. But no earthly king could ever compare to Jesus. Even in His human form, Jesus was obedient, humble, nonviolent, and faithful to His Father in all things. By following His example, we can join in His kingship. The journey begins here on earth. With Jesus as our King, we can celebrate His royal life with Him now and in the life to come.
