All Star Superfan Podcast

"And I love you too, Junior..."

Rob is joined once again by Jan Rollings to discuss season one of DC's LANTERNS starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler. We discuss each of the characters and their corresponding actors, the major storylines of the season and the ramifications they may or may not have in the future as well as the (somewhat controversial) grounded style of the series and whether or not it was wise to take such a sci-fi/fantasy mythos and dial it so far back.

And the all-important question: is the wirework in this modern prestige HBO show as good as the wirework in Superboy?!

PLUS: We discuss the Marvel's Wolverine and the brand new Hellraiser Revival game.

"We have such sights to show you..."

Alan and Rob have fallen out of the skies of Metropolis and stumbled headfirst into Hell in this Halloween Special episode of All Star Superfan Podcast as we explore the forbidden pleasures and the agonizing pain of the Hellraiser franchise: Clive Barker's 1987 masterpiece "Hellraiser" and its nine sequels (!) and the 2022 reboot.

PLUS: We discuss the original novella "The Hellbound Heart" and we discuss our expectations for the brand new single-player game "Hellraiser Revival".

How good is the first film? How bad are the straight to video sequels? Is that Henry Cavill?! How many Superboy actors featured in these films? All of these questions and so much more are answered in this spooktacular special episode!

Ten years on from BvS, we discuss how different it could have been! Rob is joined by Always Hold Onto Smallville host Zach Moore to discuss one of the many ill-fated attempts at reactivating the dormant Batman and Superman film franchises: the unproduced screenplay for Batman Vs Superman: Asylum from all the way back in June 2002, written by Andrew Kevin Walker with revisions by Akiva Goldsman (although apparently it was a lot more than that!).

The script features a retired Batman, a despondent Superman, an imprisoned Luthor, a clone of the Joker, some pretty bonkers twists and the kind of Kryptonite-powered continuity headaches only found in a 2000s DC script. All this and more!

"Nice to meet you, Trev. Folks call me Superman"

Is Superman For All Seasons really as good as everyone says it is? Or has its reputation reached Metropolis sized proportions?

In the latest episode, Alan and Rob turn their attention to the acclaimed Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale classic, taking a close look at its story, artwork, characters, emotional impact and most importantly, whether it deserves its place among the greatest Superman stories.

Is it a timeless celebration of the Man of Steel? A beautifully drawn love letter to Superman? Or is the hype flying a little too high?

There is only one way to find out...READ THE BOOK!

One Superman. Four Seasons. Two Superfans. One question: does it live up to its reputation?

"Hi. My name is Peter Parker. You don't remember me, but we used to know each other."

Rob is joined by special guest and long-time listener Jan Rollings to talk all about the 38th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the latest Tom Holland box office leviathan, "SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY" directed by Destin Daniel Crettin. Will this finally bring the MCU out of the doldrums? Is the movie too long? Is organic webbing better than mechanical webshooters? How does it shape up against previous entries in the Spider-Man movie series? Where is Peter Parker earning all of his money? Why does Kevin Feige wear so many baseball caps? All of these questions and so much more!

Check out the All Star Superfan Patreon where Rob and Jan have an extended chat all about the previous Spider-Man movies and the popular videogame series!

"I just wish you could all see the Earth the way that I see it. Because when you really look at it, it's just one world..."

We also dive back into the topic of the film itself - there are questions to ask and it is time for us to do so. Can the mythical deleted content save the film or will simple trims save the day? Do the special effects need a full overhaul or should they be left as-is? It's a heated discussion, with Alan (a critic of the film) advocating for precise cuts to enhance the entertainment value, while Rob (a longtime defender of the film) champions a mostly full reinstatement of all that was lost to strengthen the substance of Christopher Reeve and director Sidney J. Furie's original vision for the film. We don't want a war, but the threat is very much alive!

PLUS: We give our thoughts on the "Lanterns" trailer and we gear up for our "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" review, coming soon!

"By the Power of Grayskull!"

Did the film live up to Alan's nostalgia for the Filmation cartoon and all the toys?

Did Fisto and Ram Man live up to the source material?

What about Alan's daughter's reaction?

As a childless newcomer who didn't grow up with MotU, was there anything here for Rob?

Plus, we consider the film's lukewarm box office and whether or not this spells doom for the future of the franchise.

Later, the lads discuss the triumphant return of Agent 007 to the world of videogames in "007 First Light". We take a look back at the history of Bond in gaming from Timothy Dalton's "lost" third film "James Bond: The Duel" for Sega Genesis, through the multitude of successful 3D games for N64, PlayStation and beyond including legendary games like Goldeneye, 007 Nightfire and Everything or Nothing.

How does the new game stack up against the classics?

Does the game's decision to retell the origin of 007 pay off?

How did James Bond impact Alan's love of Christ?

In Episode 80 we are diving deep into a piece of Superman cinema history that was thought to be lost to the Phantom Zone forever.

Joining Alan Burke is a true legend of the Superman fan community, Martin Lakin of Supermania78 and Caped Wonder Europe.

Martin breaks down the incredible recent discovery of the "Metroclub" scene from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

For years, fans have traded theories and blurry production stills of this deleted sequence, but Martin and his team of Superfriends have worked hard to bring this rumoured scene back to life.

Whether you are a Superman IV apologist or a film history buff, this is an interview 40 years in the making...literally!

What makes you think you can take on Superman, when you can’t even handle a mere mortal in a fright mask?!

In this episode of All Star Superfan Podcast, Alan and Rob are joined by veteran rewatch podcaster Lance Laster for a retrospective review of “World’s Finest,” the legendary Batman and Superman crossover from Superman: The Animated Series. Batman and Superman must put their differences aside to face a combined threat from The Joker, Lex Luthor, and an army of killer robots! Originally aired as a three-part episode and later released as The Batman/Superman Movie, this is peak DC animation very near and dear to our 1990s hearts.

Along the way, we ask the important questions:

Would Batman really fall in love with Lois Lane?

Just how bad is the Joker’s aim?

Is Lex Luthor a great negotiator or not?

And… what on Earth happened to Bruce Wayne’s "public persona" voice?

All of this and much more, as we celebrate everything that makes World’s Finest such a standout chapter in Batman and Superman history.

PLUS: We branch out into some of our other favourite World’s Finest-style Batman/Superman stories, including Public Enemies, The Dark Knight Returns, Superman/Batman Generations, and the recent Tom King Batman run. Inevitably, comparisons are drawn to visionary director Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice... batten down the hatches, folks!
