Four days ago, a 34,000-gallon chemical storage tank at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, California began overheating. 50,000 residents were evacuated across six cities. Officials warned of two possible outcomes — a massive chemical spill, or an explosion. Neither were good.
Internal temperatures have peaked and are now trending down. A crack in the tank has relieved pressure and officially taken the explosion risk off the table. The MMA inside is curing — turning from a liquid into a solid mass — and may resolve this on its own terms.
