The struggle between the flesh and the Spirit is real for every believer. In Romans 7:14–25, the Apostle Paul describes the painful conflict of wanting to do what is right while still confronting the sin nature that dwells within us. In this teaching, we look at why God’s law is holy, just, and good, yet cannot sanctify us through the power of the flesh. We examine Paul’s statement that “in my flesh nothing good dwells,” the importance of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life, and Samson as an example of the difference between being strengthened by the Spirit and attempting to operate in our own strength. We also look at the battle that takes place in the mind and practical ways to take ungodly thoughts captive: recognizing them through self-examination, confronting them according to the word of God, committing them to prayer, and saturating our minds with Scripture. What does it mean for a believer to be “dead to the law”? In Romans 7:1-13, the Apostle Paul explains that the law of God is holy, just, and good, but sinful man does not have the ability to produce righteousness through the law. Instead, the law reveals sin and exposes our need for the grace of God. Through the body of Christ, believers have been released from the condemning power of the law and joined to the risen Christ so that we can bear fruit to God. Rather than serving God in the oldness of the letter and the strength of our flesh, we are called to serve in the newness of the Spirit. This teaching also examines the Mosaic Law, the New Covenant, the relationship between law and grace, Paul’s personal testimony, and why love is at the center of bearing fruit for God. The Feast of Tabernacles, also known as Sukkot, is the final feast called out in Leviticus 23 and a feast overflowing with the themes of joy, remembrance, provision, rest, and the presence of God. In this teaching, we look at God’s commands for the children of Israel and remember how He brought them out of Egypt and provided for them in the wilderness. We also examine the feast’s connection to rejoicing before the Lord, the significance of the eighth day, and the importance of remembering God’s past faithfulness as we trust Him with our future. We then look at two ceremonies associated with the Feast of Tabernacles during the time of Christ—the water-libation and illumination ceremonies—and how the words of Jesus in John 7 and John 8 reveal Him as the living water and the Light of the World.
