In this podcast, Robert and I chat with Miguel Herrera. We tried to meet the day before this, but our schedules just didn't match up. The day after, he drives up in a small white pick-up truck. I greet him at his door and see an IV connected to him. He seems a little weak, but you can tell he is a person that life isn't going to stop.
He tells us that this is the first time he opens up and talks about this. He gets a little emotional talking about the past. He enjoys being called a Hero. His face lights up every time he mentions it and it's for a good reason. He saved 4 people and in the process ingested filthy diesel stagnant water. As a result, he would battle sickness for a year in which the sickness claimed all of his hair.
At 58 years old, Miguel was driving behind a vehicle when he witnessed the accident. He quickly sprung into action, saved 4 children before passing out from exhaustion. Listen to Miguel "Mike" Herrera speak about the events that happened in that caliche pit on September 21, 1989 in Alton, Texas.
