Caroline is a vet technician in Chicago, Illinois. She applied for an externship program in East Africa where she could work primarily with endangered wildlife. During her time overseas, she contracted a deadly mosquito-borne illness.

In order for her insurance to cover her hospital stay for Malaria, she had to meet her deductible. A doctor recommended a chest X-ray even though it had nothing to do with Malaria. The X-ray revealed a cancerous tumor. She flew back to the U.S where she is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
