Amadeus (1984)

Orion Pictures released Amadeus to theaters on September 19, 1984. Milos Forman directs the film which stars F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce, Elizabeth Berridge.

Amadeus Movie Summary

An old Salieri slices his own throat, begging forgiveness from Mozart for supposedly assassinating him. He is carted off to a mental institution where a priest visits him and offers him absolution. Salieri tells the priest why he killed Mozart.

When Salieri was a boy, he dreamed of praising God with great music. He considered it a miracle when his father died, and he was able to gain fame and become the court composer to Joseph II. Salieri was envious of Mozart from a young age and goes to observe his work when Mozart stages a concert in Vienna. Salieri is shocked to see that Mozart is a rude, spoiled young man.

Soon thereafter, Emperor Joseph invites Mozart for an audience. Salieri composes a march in honor of Mozart’s arrival. Mozart effortlessly improves on Salieri’s march, and Salieri is humiliated and incensed. Salieri is dumbfounded as to why God would choose to grant Mozart supreme talent when Mozart was just an impudent man. After Mozart stages an opera at the royal hall, and it is apparent that Salieri’s best student has feelings for Mozart, Salieri declares that God will be his enemy and that he will destroy Mozart.
