Ambassador Samantha Power, an immigrant from Ireland, dreamed of becoming a sports journalist. But as she watched unedited tape of the Tiananmen Square Massacre as a college intern at CBS, her passion to fight for human rights was activated. She began her career as a war correspondent in Bosnia, eventually writing a book on the American response to genocide, which then-Senator Barack Obama read and took Samantha under his wing. She went on to serve on President Obama's National Security Council and as the country's UN Ambassador. Now, she's been nominated to lead the United States Agency for International Development in Biden's administration.
Samantha joins Jennifer on the show to discuss the "bat cave" – a term Samantha uses for overcoming doubts in her head. They discuss how to make big career decisions, leaning on other women for support, and navigating gender dynamics in the White House. Plus, Samantha takes us through the last 30 years of U.S. diplomacy in 10 minutes.
