Every year on the 13th of December, Sweden celebrates Lucia, an integral part of Swedish culture that brings light during the long winter darkness. Lucia, adorned in a white gown, a crown of candles, and a red sash, is followed by a procession of candle-bearing maidens dressed in white, and traditionally, men or boys known as "star boys" walk at the end of the line. Together, they sing traditional Lucia songs, creating tuneful “Luciatåg” processions that take place across the country—on national television, and in kindergartens, schools, care homes, churches, and offices.
This year, the Swedish Embassy in South Africa will host a special Lucia celebration at the Swedish Residence in Pretoria on 12th of December, featuring South African music legend Vusi Mahlasela. Often referred to as "The Voice" of South Africa, Mahlasela is renowned for his profound contributions to the anti-apartheid movement and his enduring messages of hope, love, and reconciliation.
Thelma Hlongwane spoke to the Ambassador of Sweden to South Africa, Håkan Juholt, who reflected on the significance of Lucia in these challenging times.
