When Russian soldiers invade Eastern Europe during WWII, they ravage the countryside and terrorize the people. After her mother is murdered, young Ludmelia Kudirka flees to the safety of the forest. Vowing vengeance, she joins the partisan resistance in a David-and-Goliath struggle against Stalin's mighty war machine. A Soviet military officer ordered to crush the Lithuanian resistance is enraged by Ludmelia's escape. Marshalling his killer instincts, he pursues Ludmelia and her fellow warriors into the forest, where he encounters a force he never expected. Rich with scenes and legends of Lithuania, Amber Wolf tells the little-known tale of a people struggling for their freedom against great odds. Long awaited by both the Eastern European community and WW II aficionados, Amber Wolf gels the turmoil of war into the saga of a family torn apart by the Soviet occupation.

A great read about less known side of WW2
I was reading another very good work of fiction when I picked up Amber Wolf, and I had to put it aside because I immediately got drawn into the action of Ursula Wongâs well-written and fast-paced novel. I have read accounts of the Russian armyâs race to Berlin at the end of the Second World War, but this novel exposes another side to their brutality as they occupied and resumed the Sovietization of the Baltic States.
The book is by no means a dry historical narrative, however. The action is presented through the eyes of the participants, primarily the ruthless Comrade Commander Zabrev and the young heroine Ludmelia, who is determined to avenge the rape and murder of her mother. In the course of Ludmeliaâs growth, you also get to see how war can dehumanize those on both sides of the conflict and how petty human emotions can threaten to derail even a just cause.
Iâm glad that a sequel is already in the works because Iâm anxious to see how the partisans under the leadership of Ludmelia continue their struggle for independence.
A young woman hunts a brutal killer
Set during WWII and the Soviet occupation of Lithuania, Amber Wolf by Ursula Wong details the harsh realities of war, especially for women. After seeing her mother raped and murdered by Russian soldiers, Ludmilia, a young Lithuanian woman, vows to hunt them down and exact her revenge. Her main adversary is a ruthless, high-ranking Russian soldier, Comrade Commander Zabrev.
Wong populates her novel with many characters, but Ludmilia and Zabrev are the main draw, with detailed stories about their family histories.
Ludmelia joins a group of Lithuanian partisans. Wong's research shines through in her descriptions as the partisans fight for their lives against superior forces. In such battles there are few happy endings, but Ludmilia triumphs in the end, a satisfying conclusion to a fascinating, little-known story about WW II.
Read It.
What a Thriller. Great reading.
Inspiring and Little-known Story
WWI & II and the intervening 20 years has been the subject of much of my reading through the years. Now I wonder why I hadnât advanced the history a notch to read about the postwar era. The Berlin Wall. Sure. The Korean War, of course. Lithuania? One of the Baltic states. A cruise stop.
Ursula Wong changed that. After reading the first few pages of Amber Wolf â phew! â I had to follow Ludmilia the young Lithuanian girl who witnessed Russian soldiers raping and killing her mother.
