Publisher's Summary:
Beginning with the birth of the nation, slavery divided and caused conflict for the United States of America, worsening during the country's early decades as the practice became more economically vital. Finally, in 1861, the American Civil War erupted after the election of President Abraham Lincoln.
Never acknowledging the Souths right to secede, Lincoln and the North fought the South through four long, bloody, destructive years; much longer than anyone thought the war would last.
Inside you will hear about....
By 1865, more than 700,000 American soldiers and civilians were dead (including Lincoln himself), a race of people had been freed from bondage, and an entire country needed to rebuild. The Civil War is of such crucial importance to the history of the United States not just because of these factors, but also because its legacy still lives on.

The Civil War Again?
Mr Freeman has done it again. He has created a work though short which is able to capture the essence of another period of history. I have read several of the Charles River like publications, and Freeman is never a disappointment. True this work is a summation of the American Civil War, and one can argue much is omitted. But Freeman claims nothing more. What he is able to do in his summary is capture the tone, the feel, the humanity of the period and offer the reader a spark to further his study of a particular aspect this tragic era. Or Freeman will offer a reader the opportunity to reflect on why the American Civil War has such a hold still on the South. Either way American Civil War is worth the effort. Well done, Mr. Freeman
more like a summery of the events
A bit brief, more like a summery of the events. If that is all you are looking for, this is your book. Give you an idea and from there look up events and places you need to know more about.
As an immigrant American of some years, my knowledge ...
As an immigrant American of some years, my knowledge of the Civil War was limited to the highlights. President Lincoln's speeches, Gettysburg, cotton and slavery were covered but little of the aftermath, Reconstruction and the long tail of racialism.
This 45 page gem has gone long way to spur my determination to read a lot more about the cornerstone of American history.
Our nation's problems must be solved in a constructive & collective manner.
The American Civil War tore our nation apart over the major issue of slavery though I think it made us stronger in its aftermath.
Short review of long and complicated and costly war.
This is the best overview of the American Civil war I have read. The author clearly interprets all the reasons for the war, it was not just about slavery. There are many books out there detailing all the battles and the lengthy descriptions of such but this cuts to the chase. I highly recommend reading this very informative overview, you will be happy that you did and you will learn much.
