Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Edgar Allan Poe was one of America's first native-born professional authors, but he nevertheless embodied the now-common archetype of the artist - dark, tortured, brilliant and tragic. Born into troubled conditions, Poe's life hardly improved over the years, and when it did, his happiness or triumph was always brief. His work was lauded during his lifetime, but his lifestyle never came close to matching the legacy that would swell in the decades following his death. And that untimely end, so mysterious and pathetic, was an event that only Poe or Fate could have been macabre enough to script.
However, in spite of (or perhaps because of) all of his suffering, Poe remains one of the great forces in American literature, particularly during its formative years. He was a pioneer of multiple literary traditions, including the gothic, horror, dark Romanticism, detective, satire, hoax and science fiction genres. Poe is best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre.

Fantastic in- depth information
This book, based on much research, gives an account of the entire life of Edgar Allan Poe with interesting readability. Born in 1809 in Boston to actor parents, Edgar had the misfortune of experiencing untimely deaths with his parents and those he would grow to love. Struggles with his foster father, his withdrawal from college, and girlfriend that married someone else would lead him on a trail of searching and a discontentment for most authoritative directives.
He persistently pursued publication attempts to be discovered but with meager results. It wasn't until 1833 that his talent would surface permanently after winning a writing contest. In 1839 would emerge "The Fall of the House of Usher", in 1843 "The Tell-Tale Heart", and in 1845 "The Raven", his most famous work.
Learn the details of his career as a writer and critic as you delve into his heart's convictions over reviews and find him not shy of addressing his criticisms over others work including Ralph Waldo Emerson's. It was criticisms such as these that would later hamper his popularity and success. His rocky journey in and out of employment, along with his melancholic flavor for writing horror is worth noting.
He married his cousin Virginia but more eventful would be new truths over his life of flirtations never before heard of. After his death, women would use false claims to cash in on their connection and try to find their place in literary history.
His death remains a mystery though speculation is given. Read the obituary wrote upon his death and how a seemingly historical overview of his life events and works left him with an ending all would dread with terror.
A great book and other works from this company are also noteworthy to explore.
