Around the world, national governments from Germany to Spain have surged in popularity as they have tried to rally their countries around an effective and necessary response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the tale is different in the United States - President Trump is back to his pre-pandemic lows in popularity and Americans are divided about the severity of the pandemic along party lines.
In this episode, Drew and Alex try to pick through the chaos to better understand this polarization. They believe that President Trump could have had his unifying moment during this crisis, much like George W. Bush had after 9/11, but he hasn't. Instead he has created a murky public response and has fanned the flames of polarization. However, Drew and Alex discuss that on a local and state level Americans may be more united than before. National politics are still partisan and divided, but a survey by "More in Common" found that the portion of Americans that believe America is divided has dropped from 62% to 22%. Also, over 90% of Americans felt that “we’re all in it together”, compared with 63% before the pandemic. Drew and Alex find that this is good news and may mean that common discussion can still be had. They also agree that there should be a discussion about the length and scope of these lockdowns, and the impact they will have on the economy.
