Amid Police Shortages, Officers Face The Same Crime With Less Manpower

Nationwide police shortages continue, as violent crime in major cities has become a front-page issue. This past week New York City Police officer Jonathan Diller was shot and killed on duty by a repeat offender, highlighting the issue of recidivism in criminal justice. Pittsburgh is one of the cities that has had to make department-wide shifts due to a drop in officers, losing nearly 250 employees since 2020. Chief of Police for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Larry Scirotto joins the Rundown to discuss what changes he has made to assure major crimes are being pursued, the challenges they have faced with recruitment, and how they are addressing the issue of repeat offenders in their city.
