Amos was a prophet from Judah in the south. Yet, God sent him to the northern part of Israel. When we read about the prophets they’re usually living in the areas they prophesied in, not Amos.
He was from a town called Tekoa, which is out in the wilderness overlooking the Dead Sea area. If it weren’t for Amos nobody would probably know about this place. God called this preacher out from nowhere, to go to Bethel, which was headquarters for the northern Kingdom of Israel. J Vernon McGee called him the country preacher that came into the big city. Amos was not a professional prophet (he will say this in Chapter 7). I’m not the son of a prophet. But, I was a herdsman from Tekoa and a picker of Sycamore figs. Yet, God will use this man to share His message.
