endearing and insightful

The author is someone with whom I disagree on virtually anything but she is a person of integrity and I was interested to see what she writes like.

I know little of the workings of the minds of teenage girls but, as far as I can see, the author portrays them well.

At a time of enemy occupation and rationing, I thought it a bit fare fetched that girls would be expected to wear white dresses for an Episcopal visitation but I was pleased to hear a consideration of what it means to love your enemy and to care for Jews. Their disappearance is poignant.

She portrays well the way in which ordinary, decent Germans got caught up in the Hitler movement.

As in real life, the priest who acts as confessor is much more lenient on and understanding about sin than is the penitent.

I am not an opera fan but it would appear that there are echoes of Dido and Aeneas in this story.

I enjoyed it so much that I ordered the sequel before finishing it.
