Set in the 1960s, Elwood is an ambitious young man from the Tallahassee, Florida area. Living with his grandmother, he follows a strict daily routine that includes school, where Mr. Hill, a perceptive teacher, recognizes his potential. Mr. Hill encourages Elwood to pursue a technical education to better his future in the racially segregated South. While heading to the program, Elwood accepts a ride north, only to realize he’s with someone wanted by the police. This unfortunate twist of fate leads him to Nickle Academy, a reform institution, where he meets other troubled teens under the supervision of administrator Spencer. Separated from his grandmother, Elwood's spirit begins to wane as he finds himself trapped in a brutal system with little hope for freedom.
