Five hundred years ago, a young tree was growing outside of Chattanooga:  the hemlock.

Hemlocks have been called “the redwoods of the East” and the “iconic evergreen of the Appalachians” - but in this area, they are also in danger of being wiped out as a species by an invasive insect.

Juliet Johnson is a wilderness advocate who teaches conservation and foraging - and last month, she wrote about hemlocks for “Nooga Today”...
