#5. An Art Show on Black Femininity: Balancing a Creative Project with your Day Job

Listen Later

#5. Miela Foster is a 23 year old working for Apple as a Project Manager and an artist on the side. This February, she hosted her first art show at Another Cafe in San Francisco, after spending 8 months preparing for it. The show, featuring 10 pieces, was called A Sister of the Yam, centered around black femininity and dedicated to black women that came before her as well as black women who will be here after her. In addition to her acrylic paintings, Miela also prepared pieces of poetry to accompany her art as a part of her vision. Largely inspired by author Bell Hooks, Miela uses her art as an avenue to help liberate and tell stories about her experience as an American Black woman.

During the 2019 pandemic, she became more conscious of the politics of race and began creating visual art as a method to explore, liberate, accept and love herself through her identity. In this episode, we discuss Miela’s relationship with her art and where her inspiration comes from, the discipline it took to prepare, and put on her first art show while managing a full time job, and finally her visions and feelings about creating art in the future and more. Join us, as this episode explores the challenges of balancing a creative passion with the more technical side of yourself. Check out her art at her website here or her instagram here.
