KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I’m using sport as a context for life. The podium matters, but it’s the podium of life that we’re going for. Mental health is very prevalent in sport these days and I think it’s about time that we started looking at this. Skill can only take you so far, fitness can only take you so far, and at the highest levels those things plateau very quickly because everyone’s good, fit, strong and fast. Mental toughness is where athletes can find an advantage.
  • I work on two of the four pillars of high performance: Technical/Tactical – more drills, more skills, more tactics, more training, more practices. Physical – fit, strong, aerobic, anaerobic, power, speed, etc. Mental – pre-game prep, visualisation, mistake response. The fourth one that no one talks about is called the Social/Emotional pillar – emotional intelligence, the ability to acknowledge, understand and manage thoughts and feelings, the ability to form and sustain healthy relationships especially the relationship with yourself. Most athletes are unbalanced, they focus on the Technical/Tactical and Physical and maybe a bit on the Mental, but the Social/Emotional pillar is completely undeveloped.
  • Athletes suffer from FOPO (fear of people’s opinions). You should live your life in such a way that when people speak poorly of you no one believes them. We can’t control what other people thins, say or do, we can only control if we’re living our best lives, and being our best self. It’s also important who we listen to and who we stop listening to. We need to do a better job listening to ourselves rather than the noise because we forget who we are and start to believe things that are being said about us. When you worry too much about what others think you will always be their prisoner.
  • On the biggest stage on the biggest day of my life (the Rio Olympics 2016) we choked, but I have to take responsibility for that because I was part of the coaching staff, I didn’t show up as my best self on that stage and it put me into a deep darkness for a long time after. When I emerged out of the darkness I asked myself two questions: What didn’t I see? And what did I see but refused to look at? That last question haunted me and I vowed from that day forward that I was going to help athletes never to choke on the biggest day/stage of their life. There is an antidote to not choking but sport doesn’t teach us. I give people a toolkit so when the storm comes they have a lifejacket.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Isn’t it great when you figure out your true calling? I figured out my true calling: To serve people as a mental toughness coach.’

‘A lot of athletes do not know themselves, they have never looked within because sport teaches us to do the opposite, be bulletproof, have no problems and no weaknesses.’

‘I don’t talk too much about confidence in my work because I think it’s overrated and misunderstood. Confidence is an emotion based on results. If you’re not good at something you’re not going to be confident. When our competence improves so does our confidence because we believe “I can do this” we have the skills now and that also reduces anxiety, especially when your pay is often based on your performance as an athlete.’

‘I will teach you how to swim when the storm comes.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Shawnee Harle helps athletes make sense of what's going on in their heads, cut through the noise, and unleash their inner tiger. Increasing emotional intelligence helps build a toolkit to show up with courage and confidence when it matters most.

For this to happen, we must do heart work. Why? Because that's where the truth is, and the truth will set you free.  The truth is, Mental Toughness is NOT about getting rid of our negative feelings. Mental Toughness is about managing ALL thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Building a toolkit helps manage what's going on in your head AND heart. It equips you to face and handle the storms that inevitably arise in the pursuit of your goals and dreams.

Shawnee works with athletes of all ages and sports, from novices to experts. And because it takes a village, she also works with parents and coaches.

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
