An Authentic Change SeriesMission Introduction:I love flying. There are a lot of awful things about flying. The cramped seats, the terrible food. The guy with an awful cold who sits next to you on a flight. This one time Beth had sit next too a really strange lady for six hours.Flying has a lot of negatives but I still love it for two simple reasons. The first is because, if I’m flying it means I’m going somewhere. I’m going on an adventure. To somewhere exciting. Even if it’s just going home, being on a plane means I’m being sent off to someplace new. The other reason is that I love looking out the window. I guess I’m still a kid at heart because it never gets old for me to look out the window of a plane and see the clouds and sky and cities far below. I have always loved it. If I’m on a plane my face is usually glued to the window. Beth sometimes will purposely take the window seat just to bug me. It doesn’t usually end well. I just love looking out too much.Today we are going to look at our next core value. The idea of being focused on mission. Mission isn’t simply about sending money to someone in south america or africa. Being a church focused on mission means being all about bringing those who don’t Know Jesus in. Being about mission means having a heart for Making Jesus Known in our community. It means speaking boldly about who Jesus is when we would rather keep the peace. If we want to be a church about Knowing Jesus and Making Him Known then we need to have Mission at our core. We need to bring others in otherwise, one day, we will be closing our doors. We need to tell other people about the Good News. We’re going to look at the importance of mission today by comparing two different men of God in the Bible. Section 1: Simon Becomes PeterThe first man most of you have probably have heard of before. His name was Peter, and he was on the Jesus’ 12 disciples. In fact Peter was kind THE Disciple. He was kind of the head discipline and had a special place amongst Jesus’ followers. The bible at one point literally calls them “The disciples and Peter”. Peter was probably the closest person on Earth to Jesus. He Knew Jesus. The one who followed him the most devoted. Peter loved Jesus and wanted to do anything he could. He had a heart that always said “Yes Lord”. But that doesn’t mean that Peter was perfect by any means. In fact, Peter had a bit of a reputation in the bible for being impulsive and a bit arrogant. At one point Peter tried to rebuke Jesus for something he said. That did not go over well. At another point he tried to convince Jesus to stay on a mountaintop with him instead of going back to the people. He also cut off the ear of a guy who threatened to take Jesus away. Peter was by no means a perfect man. He was all kinds of messed up. Yet He was someone who wanted to Know Jesus. no-one could deny that he loved God. With all of his heart he wanted to do what God commanded him. Even if he messed up along the way. In fact, Peter’s love for God was how he got his name. Peter wasn’t always called peter. He was born Simon Bar-Jonah. or “Simon, son of Jonah. It was Jesus that changed his name. One day, the disciples were walking with Jesus when he came to asked them a question ”He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But you,” He asked them, “who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” 17 And Jesus responded, “Simon Bar-Jonah, p you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind
