“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10: 10 (NIV)
There is a thief that wants to destroy our lives. His name is Satan, the Evil One. Why does he want to destroy? The answer is actually very simple. Satan is at war against God, who He hates with an undying hatred. But He cannot reach God, who is all powerful and all sovereign. Thus, he targets those who are made in God’s image - you and I. In doing so, he seeks to destroy God in effigy. He wants to destroy you because God made you in His image.
What are Satan's strategies? Jesus says the thief “comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” This is his only agenda. He steals our joy by convincing us that we are unworthy, even though God has completely forgiven us. He tries to convince us that what God has said is unreasonable and will not bring us satisfaction and in the process leads many into ditches in life. He tempts us to do things that are sinful with the promise of fulfillment. He wants us to put our security in things and money rather than in God. The bottom line is that he is bent on bringing pain, sorrow and destruction to your life.
Fortunately, we have a friend who is greater than our enemy. Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” What is the life that Jesus came to bring? It is a life free from guilt, addiction and bondage. It is life with a purpose and a God given calling. It is life lived in the grace and blessings of God. The Evil One comes bent on destruction of our lives, while Jesus comes to save us from ourselves, from the Evil One and our sin and give us an amazing, purposeful and blessed life.
To the extent that we follow the path of the Enemy, we lose and experience personal loss. Only Jesus satisfies and gives life. Satan can provide momentary amusement or pleasure, but he is a thief who wants to steal, kill and destroy your long term joy. Every day, we make a choice as to which we will follow: the thief, or the author of life. Joshua said it this way, “As for me and my household, we will follow the Lord.” Don’t be duped by Satan, but follow our Savior with all your heart and soul. And you will find life and life in abundance.
PRAYER
Father, I have experienced the pull of the evil one and lived to regret decisions I have made. Remind me often that You are the author of life and Satan is the author of death. Give me the will and the power to choose life through following You closely. Thank You for Your gift of an abundant and eternal life. Amen.
