An Extraordinary custom, the Carnival and Tsiknopempti are celebrated in the first 3 weeks before Easter.
Tsiknopempti is celebrated on the Thursday in the second week of the 10 weeks before Greek Easter. The first 3 weeks leading to Easter are the three “free weeks” of the Carnival. During this time there isn't strict fast, only Wednesday and Fridays are kept for Fasting. The next 6 weeks are the Sarakosti , the 40 days of Easter. During this period, fasting involves not eating oil, except on Sundays where it is permitted. The Last week , the Holy Easter week, fasting is stricter.
Tsiknopempti is a wonderful celebration, where you release “Tsikna” the smell of stink literally in the air. In reality the air is filled with the aromas of roasting meats. Families get together and eat , different meats, that day, they laugh have wine or not depending. This is one of those uniting days. A custom that has survived 2000 years. Technically this is the preparation for the fasting ahead. Today however, many people don't fast and have broken away from the fasting tradition, however the celebration and festivities of Tsikonpempti and the Carnival are kept.
On the Third week of Easter is the Carnival. The Mardi Gras like in Brazil. Greece has many places that have beautiful Carnivals. One of the largest are held in Patra.
Hoping you get the opportunity to see the Carnival of Patra. In Athens we have our own Carnival celebrations, dressing up and the walking through Plaka or other Areas of Athens singing and showing off our costumes. It is a joyous time.
