Meet Charles Back, Owner and Winemaker Fairview Wine and Cheese, located in Paarl, South Africa
Charles Back, from lineage of great entrepreneurs, innovators and winemakers, took full responsibility for the farm in 1995 after it being in the family since 1902. Wanting to do things differently, he introduced Mediterranean grapes such as Viognier, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah to the Cape. He also began to make artisanal cheese – a business that has gone on to become every bit as prestigious and successful as wine. In 2014 Charles received the International Wine Challenge Lifetime Achievement and recognised as the most awarded winemaker in South Africa
