Introduction for Podcast
Welcome!
My name is Michael Mullen, and I am your host for Morning Mercies. The book of Psalms in the Old Testament of the Bible is given to us by God to teach us how to pray, to have conversation with Him. For people of the Chrstian faith this has often been where we start when we desire to pray, and for good reason.
The Pslams may be the most accessible of all the scriptures. Though inspired by the Spirit of God, though drenched in rich theology, they are human through and through. Where do we find such joy, such lament, such anger as we do in these songs of worship? Where do we find such intimacy spoken to God as this? I believe that there is a brutal honesty in these scriptures that we need as we come to God in conversation. As we pray them, we cannot hide, for they are meant to reveal our deepest selves to Him. They are forever turning us back to Him. It is for these reasons that the Church, almost from its beginning, has made it a practice to read these Psalms as a daily discipline.
And it is for these purposes that this podcast is shared with you. Morning Mercies is a set of daily readings and prayers that focuses on the Psalms as a vehicle of letting God speak to us, as well as a place of learning how to speak to Him. We learn to pray by praying. There is no other way. Every morning we will read one psalm, share a short meditation on what this song means,and then we will pray. Its that simple.
The key is to do it daily, at a selected time, someplace quiet or private. This is how we form a holy habit, and how we may begin to hear the LORD speak to us. It maybe helpful to keep a journal to record your thoughts and feeling as we do this together.
I look forward to sharing my mornings with you as we draw closer to Him. As we get ready to begin this journey of prayer, I want to share with you some words from Psalm 42.
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.
By day
the LORD directs his love,
at night
his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.
May the God of your life bless you. Amen.
