Show Notes:

Thank you so much for spending this time together with Sumyia and me. I really love being able to just hang out on the playground.

To wrap up, here are a few takeaways from today’s chat with my fabulous guest, Sumyia Sheikh

In Saudi Arabia, your residency status is tied to your job.

When you come to Canada, the barriers and obstacles to getting licenses forces people to rethink and reinvent themselves. Think about the medical system.

If you are thinking about coming to Canada, it is a good idea to get your university degrees recognized before you get here.

It makes me feel good to know that Sumyia and other Muslim women are choosing to immigrate to Canada because they feel it is more accepting and more tolerant of their religion – and how they choose to wear a hijab.

The point system for immigration means that people get more points based on their youth, their educational accomplishments, and their ability to speak one or both of the official languages. The immigration process is definitely not black and white, so  in my mind, the resiliency that many immigrates have starts to develop during the immigration process.

COVID meant more opportunities, and Sumyia seized them! Her source of joy includes being with people she loves and making a difference in someone’s life.

Her advice to others – nothing is the end of the world, and this too shall pass.

Please remember to check out the Riyadh Animal Shelter – and a big shout to them for all of their amazing work!
