After a flashback reveals how he was tricked into this act by a Union scout, the narrative follows Farquhar's seemingly miraculous escape: the rope breaks, he falls into the river, evades bullets, swims ashore, and makes a long, arduous journey home. However, just as he is about to embrace his waiting wife, the story abruptly snaps back to reality, revealing that the entire escape was a vivid hallucination experienced in the instant before his death by hanging.
