An Ode to Ray Brower (Stand by Me)

Listen Later

In the 1980s, Stephen King was a hot commodity in Hollywood. Studios couldn't get enough of his novels and short stories. When King published Different Seasons in 1982, it featured "The Body," a story about four boys taking a secret journey through rural Maine to locate the body of a boy killed in a train accident. The film rights were quickly purchased, and after some initial pre-production issues, Rob Reiner directed this coming-of-age story that blends nostalgia, sentimentality, and brotherhood into a sweet and moving film. Featuring River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland, Stand by Me (an alternate title to avoid audiences confusing the film as a bodybuilding or sex film) was a huge hit with moviegoers. It's still considered one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King story. Grab your copy of the movie and join us for our audio commentary!
