Continuing his coverage of Russia’s war on Ukraine, today Allen Ruff speaks with Anatol Lieven from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

Getting past simplistic explanations of the war as being only about Putin or democracy versus autocracy, they discuss the history of Russia and Ukraine’s “fraternal rivalry” and Washington’s interests and goals in the conflict.

Anatol Lieven is senior research fellow on Russia and Europe at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He is the author of many books, including Ukraine and Russia: A Fraternal Rivalry (United States Institute of Peace Press, 1999).
