Does God have emotions? How you answer that question will have tremendous implications for your life. Why? Because we become what we worship. If you worship a cold, distant, and emotionless deity, you will become cold, distant, and emotionless (not to mention you wouldn't be worshiping the God revealed in the Bible). But what if you worship Yahweh? "Yahweh is a compassionate and gracious God; slow to anger and overflowing with loyal-love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6). The God who has revealed himself through the Bible has made himself known and he is neither an aloof being incapable of empathy nor a capricious and unpredictable tyrant in the mold of Zeus. Yahweh is a God who is deeply and emotionally invested in his creatures. But, you may ask, "How can we reconcile the idea that Yahweh's very name is 'passion' (Exodus 34:14) with the idea that with him, 'there is no variation or shadow due to change' (James 1:17)"? Good question, Jeff. I'm glad you asked. Listen here for my best shot at an answer.
