Idolatry is not merely bowing before physical statues; it is an unnatural "de-creation"—exchanging the eternal, living Creator for created things. When we elevate God's good gifts (career, beauty, family, romance, approval, or health) into ultimate "god things," they become cruel masters that demand our sacrifice and deform us into their lifeless image. Yet, even in the bitter fruit of exile and failure, God’s covenant mercy provides a way home through shuv—repenting and returning to Him. As Paul reminds us in Colossians 3, your idols demand that you die for them, but Christ died for you. Our disordered loves find true rest and freedom only when we remember that our life is hidden in Christ alone.
