In Mark’s gospel, John the baptizer is in the wilderness proclaiming “baptism and repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” He is preparing the way of Jesus, and in so doing is, quintessentially, Advent’s messenger, heralding the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. We are Advent’s messengers, too, if we do our own preparation work. This begs the question: what is our work? In my sermon “…And What Are You Giving Up for Advent?,” we will explore the answers to that question, suggesting that Advent has far more in common with Lent than you think! Please join us.
