Wild Wonders

Andean Cat Specialization Leads to Extinction

Listen Later

The Andean cat is considered the most endangered wild feline in the world, inhabiting the remote, high-altitude rocky regions of South America. Perfectly adapted to this harsh environment, it relies on natural camouflage, a long tail for balance, and dense fur to withstand extreme cold. Because sightings are exceptionally rare, scientists track the species using camera traps and DNA collected from scat to estimate population size and movement. Its survival is threatened by mining-driven habitat destruction, dependence on a narrow prey base dominated by viscachas, and the ongoing impacts of climate change on fragile alpine ecosystems. Conservation efforts now focus on understanding the species’ genetic health and increasing awareness to prevent the disappearance of this elusive predator.
