Andrew Carnegie: The World's Richest Man

Listen Later

Growing up, my hero was always Andrew Carnegie.

Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist who led the expansion of the U.S. steel industry in the late 19th century, becoming one of the wealthiest individuals of his time. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Carnegie immigrated to the United States with his family in 1848, settling in Pennsylvania. He began working as a telegraph operator and climbed the ranks through positions in the railroad industry, where he made key investments that laid the foundation for his fortune.

Carnegie revolutionized steel production with the Carnegie Steel Company. In 1901, he sold his company to J.P. Morgan for $480 million, which became U.S. Steel.

A major philanthropist, Carnegie donated the majority of his wealth to causes like libraries, education, and scientific research, embodying his belief in the “Gospel of Wealth”—that the man who dies rich, dies disgraced. His legacy includes the founding of Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Mellon University, and thousands of public libraries worldwide.
