Andrew McFarland: Doubling fees will drive tourists away

Listen Later

A kayak rental company says more tourists will opt for day trips if they are charged more to use walks.
The government announced over the weekend that overseas tourists will be pay twice as much as New Zealanders to use four of the nine Great walks.
DOC is also looking at a kiwi share system that would give New Zealanders preferential treatment to tracks and huts.
But Nelson Kahu Kayaks director Andrew McFarland told Mike Hosking most tourists are travelling on the cheap.
"More people are going to be doing day trips. They'll still be using all the DOC facilities throughout the day and then they'll drive away and freedom camp somewhere else."
McFarland says it should be made fair across the board.
