An adult seal and 40 pups have been found dead on an isolated part of Banks Peninsula near Christchurch.
The department will keep a monitoring brief on the fur seal (kekeno) population. The results of the post-mortem examinations won't be known for at least several days.
Department of Conservation Christchurch operations manager Andy Thompson told Mike Hosking that at the moment it looks like natural causes are to blame for the deaths, but they will not be 100% certain until the autopsy is revealed.
"It could be quite high seas which occurred about three weeks ago, and most of the seals look like they have been dead for that long."
