Anglesea By-Election Returning Officer Noel McPhee

Noel McPhee appeared on Mitchell’s Front Page to discuss the process of running the Anglesea by-election. The Victorian Electoral Commision sent through the following additional information in response to questions raised in the interview: When would someone need to turn 18 in order to be eligible to vote? If a person turns 18 on or before election day (31 August) and they were provisionally enrolled as a 17 year old before the close of roll for the Anglesea Ward by-election (that is, before 4.00 pm on Friday 5 July), then they are entitled to vote and will receive a ballot pack in the post. A 17 year old Australian citizen may apply for provisional enrolment to enable them to vote if they attain the age of 18 in the period between the close of roll and election day. Note: Though this is a postal election and voting closes at 6.00 pm on Friday 30 August, the designated ‘election day’ is Saturday 31 August, and this marks the cut-off date for when someone turning 18 can vote in this election. Can dual citizens run for council? In Victoria, there is no law preventing candidates from running if they have dual citizenship.
