Another Busy August Weekend on the Roads of Spain Expected

Listen Later

Roads across Spain are expected to be exceptionally busy this weekend, with a combination of holidaymakers travelling to and from coastal resorts and numerous local events causing significant congestion and potential diversions.

Friday, 8th August 2025

Traffic is expected to be heavy, particularly in the afternoon and evening, as holidaymakers begin their weekend getaways. The main roads leading out of large urban centres such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia will be congested from approximately 4pm until late evening.

The A-7 and AP-7 motorways along the Mediterranean coast, particularly in the Valencian Community and Andalucía, are likely to see high volumes of traffic.

There is also a major concert by Blackpink in Barcelona on Saturday, which will likely cause increased traffic in the city on Friday as people travel for the event.

Saturday, 9th August 2025

The intense traffic leaving major cities and heading towards coastal areas will continue throughout the morning, from around 9am to 2pm.

The DGT has also highlighted the return of some holidaymakers who are finishing their July holidays and have brought their return forward.

This may lead to some congestion on major motorways heading back to cities during the evening.

In Barcelona, the Circuit Festival continues, which will cause localised traffic problems in the city. The Blackpink concert is also taking place, which will cause significant local congestion and potential closures around the concert venue.

Sunday, 10th August 2025

Sunday will see a continuation of high traffic volumes, particularly on routes connecting coastal towns and beaches.

Congestion will be especially high on major routes heading back towards the large urban centres from late afternoon, between 6pm and 11pm.

The DGT advises that this will be the busiest period of the weekend for returning traffic.

It is the Day of Cantabria, which is a regional observance, so local traffic in that area may be busier than usual.

Next Week

The start of next week will see a continuation of the busy summer traffic patterns. The Assumption of Mary on Friday, 15th August, is a national holiday, and a major traffic operation is expected to begin on Thursday, 14th August, and run through the weekend. This will be one of the busiest periods of the summer, with long-distance movements on all major routes across Spain. Travellers should expect significant delays and plan their journeys well in advance.
