Omicron BA.5 is now beginning to wane, and we’re breathing a collective sigh of relief. Some bad news comes from Japan which is characterizing the next likely variant BA.2.75.
India was the site where BA.2.75 first popped up last spring and quickly eclipsed the BA.5 subvariant there. BA.2.75 is more transmissible than even BA.5 and has been detected in at least 34 countries globally and in at least 7 states in the US.
Japanese studies show that BA.2.75 binds to human cells more firmly, replicates faster, and seems to cause more lung damage than BA.5, our current subvariant. BA.5 seemes to preferentially infect the bronchial air passages.
It’s likely that BA.2.75 will be coming soon to your neighborhood. It slips by the current protective antibodies we acquired from vaccinations and infections better than BA.5. Some good news: it is responsive to the latest monoclonal antibody bebtelovimab.
