… then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
They will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
You will trample the great lion and the serpent (Ps 91:10-13).
The existence of Angels is hidden in the Bible. Even in the passages where you see an angel appear, the description of his work is moved away from the center of the narratives. According to the above scripture, it is the Lord who sends and commands the angels to do the work for him. Note that they are called “his angels.” They are sent to guard and protect us. They lift us in their hands so that we will not stumble with our foot. Their hands support our foot, and because of their humble help, we “tread upon the lion and the cobra,” and “trample on snakes and scorpions” to overcome all the power of the enemy. Indeed, it is by the victory God gave us though Jesus Christ that we can overcome the enemy, but when it comes to actual fighting in our earthly circumstances, it is God’s angels who help and support us.
So, we want to know how angels work for us, and we will use the Bible as our textbook. The Bible contains some stories—true stories—where angels are mentioned. Let us read, for example, the story of finding a wife for Isaac in Gen 24. Abraham called his chief servant, and said:
The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father's household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, “To your offspring I will give this land”—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there (Gen 24:7).
What does “he will send his angel before you” mean? How did the angel actually help this servant find Rebecca? Well, when you go on to read what happened, you will see it. Without the knowledge of angels and their existence, we would think that everything happened accidentally. For God, nothing happens accidentally. God had already prepared Rebecca for Isaac’s wife, but the servant had not seen her, nor had she known she was going to see him. It was for this purpose that this angel was sent before the servant.
Another interesting story along this topic that is worth reading is the story of Cornelius in Acts 10. Try to see the similarities in how an angel helped the people who did not know each other.
One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa (Acts 10:3-8).
Cornelius and Peter did not know each other, but God wanted them to meet, and an angel was used. The story says that this angel had gone after speaking to Cornelius, and it sounds as if he did nothing afterwards. But do you think it is true? How about those who gathered at Cornelius’ house? Who helped them gather? Every thing went well, and what a great miracle they came to have!
