Host Intro: New Yorkers with disabilities can schedule transportation a day in advance through the Access-A-Ride program. But, it’s hard to predict emergencies — even spontaneous trips — in advance. As part of a pilot program launched a few years ago, some Access-A-Ride users can call a ride on-demand. Advocates gathered at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Headquarters to call for an expansion in on-demand services. They want all Access-A-Ride users to have an unlimited number of rides. But the MTA can only do so much when it faces funding shortages. As a result, the MTA is considering cutting on-demand services for riders with disabilities. Hibah Ansari reports.
